PostSubject: The Body; Lesson 1: Eyes   Sat Apr 18, 2009 10:26 am

Okay people, I've been given a second chance so I'm going to do my job and even if it's inactive at least I've done my job, right? This is Lesson 1 in 'The Body' Semester. From now until shall we say June? We'll be doing a step by step follow up to the whole body. How does that sound? I think it sounds kind of cool lol

Okay, I've seen the talent on this site, it's A M A Z I N G. Far better than whatever I could do. I'm only good with eyes and hands, we all have out weaknesses, and here is where we improve on them right? But not everyone can draw a full body, so were going to break it down into parts. This is Lesson 1: Eyes

Okay, Task 1:Gather Data, get a picture of an eye. Easy, huh? lol I'll get one now, and i'll post it.

Okies, I found one -

This is the eye that I will refer back to in my lesson.

Task 2: Study, study your eye, or study my eye lol

Can you see how everything links up? How every eyelash is there yet not there? And finnally, can you see the trickest of all? Can you see the Iris? How it is so complex yet so simple? How colour merges with colour to form the exotic blue colour? Then abruptly stops where the pupil begins? Can you see the edges of the iris, how they come from black, to ddark blue, to navy to a shocking electric blue? All in the space of 0.002 milliterres? I hope you can see what I see, this is studying your picture before you draw it.

Task 3: Pick your tools.

With art you can work with a number of things, you can wrok with a 2b pencil or a dried tamato dipped in red paint, a wet brick to watercolours. For eyes, when starting off, I always think that pencils are the best options. Now, that's just my oppinion, and you can choose any other utencils, but I'm going to choose these pencils: HB, 2B, 6B

I work well with less pencils, but more of a wide range of them. You may work well with pencil colours, I don't mind. Every artist has his or her's besty utencils and I'm nto here to tell you how to draw, I'm here to help you improve your drawings. Indiviuality in art is like oxygen to the world.

Task 4: Draw an outline

Sketch lightly the basic outline of your eyes: the ey itself, the eyeris, eyebrow and eye lashes. Take care not to add any detail as this is just a rough sketch. Do this with your lightest pencil so that it can be rubbed out later on.

Task 5: Drawing the eye in full.

T5 i) Use the rough outline as a guidance barrior for your work. I tend o think that working from the centre outwards is always a good way to go when drawing eyes. So lets start with the pupil. As far as my science knowledge goes, the pupil is actually a hole in which light enters your eye. It's the thing you see out of for basic terms lol. But I don't think that drawing a big gaping tunnel in the sentre of your eye is a good way to go. It'sa simple black dot. Tthat's all it is, so draw a simple black dot and you'll be fine lol

ii)
Drawing the iris. This is where you can either draw it with non-coloured pencils or you can turn to colour pencils, depending on the picture of your eye. The Iris is complex, and that is what you want to pull off in your drawing right? Sometimes, complexity can be shown with simplicity. Just a series of overlopping lines can create a swirl of mystery in this Iris and that's really all you need. The edges of th Iris are darker that the middle, verging on black. So if you, like me, have just used pencils, make the middle of the Iris lighter than it's black edges, pressing hard on the pencil for the outer edges.

iii) The bit outside of the iris is white, but their are small faint lines of red in everyone's eyes. Ddraw them in lightly, but it won't hurt you too much to leave them out, and just keep the space white and blank.

iv) Drawing the eyelashes. Take care when you draw the eyelashes, because they can easily ruin your eye. Go slowly on the eylashes, as they often overlap the iris or the rest of the eye which is white. Draw them with clean, confident strokes and don't hesistate to overlap anything in your work.

v) The eyebrows. They can be tricky, but keep referring back to your eye. Eeyebrows work in a specific way, and all of the little lashes go in one direction. Except for a few wayward ones. I would suggest drawing each lash individually, although, you can get away with drawing in a few lashes here and there. Although, that isn't really drawing what you see and seeing what you draw. So you can, but if it's for an exam, don't. You will probabaly get marked down for inaccuracy.

vi) Connect all of the eye's bits together with seeing how the eye has little lines around it, tying everything together. When you have done this, add in the last finnishing touches, stand back and admire your eye.

The Body; Lesson 1: The eye. COMPLETE!

I really hope this lesson helped, and I'm going to need some help with a few of the other body parts, so any help would be appreiciated. And where are the other teachers? I'm going to need your help.

Next lesson: The Body; Lesson 2: The Nose

Unfortunatly, my scanner is broken and I'll have to wait till monday to get some battery's to take a picture of my eye drawing to put it up here but it's going to be really good working with you!

As I said before, you can go ahead and take Lesson 2: The Nose if you wish, and then I'll do Lesson 3!

Okay, I´ll take lesson two: the nose then, but I´ll need some time to get to know how to do that....
So I guess I´ll have the lesson ready this evening....Or so I hope^^

Uhm, in reading your lesson again, there´s only one thing I´d like to add:

When drawing an eye, keep in mind that the thing you´re referring to is a three-dimensional object and that you have to show that in your drawing too.
There´s light and shadow and you have to use those two to make your eye look real.
See how the light reflects where the pupil is? See how it´s darker at the edges?
Draw your eye like you see it (I recommend using a mirror when really drawing not a picture) and you´ll learn^^

So I´m done^^
I´ll now try to figure out how to explain drawing a nose....XD

Thanks for your tips, hon. I gave up art last year, but I still learned quite a bit, but it's good to have someone who's actually doing art for a key subject!

I´m doing my Abitur Exam in Art^^ Well, the practical part of the exam went more than well but I don´t know for the theory yet^^
What year are you in atm, Kira?

What do you think about a theoretical part in this Art Class here, too?

Theoriticals parts on Art could be assingments maybe? Set an assingment on a particular Artist? I particualrily like Van Goh and Picasso, but Da Vinci is equally as good!

Oh aha, we have year 13 in London too! But, it's like Sixth Form or University, I forget lol

I think you should have a practical part of it as well where we have to actually put the techniques to use and post it on here or something like that.

sorry I haven't been here, I have exams at school. And yes, Ii was going to set an assigment for it. ^^

But again, sorry, I have been away, I got forced to revise and study without posting anything.

Assignment then? As down.the.rabbit.hole has said, I want you to put the theory and techniques to use, and draw your own eye. You don't have to do it exactly the way Ii have said to, as again, art is your own and no one else's. But let's see what we can all do, I know it shall be amazing!
