When making a banner, avatar, or any type of art or graphic for that matter, it's important that you know about colors. So, this is a lesson on color.

First, we'll take a look at a normal color wheel:

As, you can see, this is a fairly basic method of seeing the different colors, and what they combine into.

Complimentary colors
Complimentary colors are the colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, like red and green or indigo and yellow. These colors are completely different, but they compliment each other, hence the name 'complimentary colors'.

Split complimentary colors
Split complimentary colors are the two colors closest to a color's complimentary colors. (the colors on either side of the complimentary color.)

Triad colors
Triad colors are three colors that are equally spaced apart on the color circle, like so:

Analog colors
Analog colors are the colors next to each other on the color wheel. These colors are also known as harmony colors. These colors are normally found in nature scenes.

Primary colors
Primary colors are red, blue and yellow, these colors are the three colors that combine at different amounts to create other colors, yet other colors cannot create them. All colors are made from these colors.

Secondary colors
Secondary colors are the colors that show on the color wheel beside the colors right next to the primary colors and are created by combining two primary colors together, so, green orange and purple.

Tertiary colors
Tertiary colors are the colors that are created by combining a primary color and a secondary color. These colors are found in between the primary colors and the secondary colors on the color wheel.

Which gives us the full color wheel!

Important to remember when choosing colors

It's important to remember that colors look slightly different when put with other colors, so you may have to change the color a little to get the exact color you want. Colors stand out more on a contrasting background than on one of a similar color. Different colors come across with different meanings, for instance, red can mean anger, danger, or love. If you were trying to get the meaning of anger across, you probably wouldn't use white, because, well, it's more of a neutral color. Also, when you're using a picture in your graphic/banner/art contrasting and clashing isn't always best, if you're trying to get the picture(s) noticed then choose a color that matches with the picture, that way, people aren't distracted by the background. On the other hand, it you want the background noticed more than the other parts of the banner, use contrasting colors, bright colors that aren't in the picture.

Ok, this is the end of the first lesson (finally), hopefully you will find it useful in your future graphic making projects!
