| I'm not entirely sure I can post this here... but I need opinions please. I'm writing this for a contest. I need to know that I used the right syntax and the right grammer. Please let me know... and please be kind. Thanks Ain’t That A Kick In The Head By: Christine Schram
I cannot believe what my mother and father have just told me about your dinner guests, the ones who have traveled all the way from America just to “visit”.
No, not visit… That’s not the right term at all. The right term would consist of the word bride and hunt.
So I must inform those of you reading this that I have just been given away to a family that I don’t even know. Not in the way that you are most likely thinking but more like in the way of marriage.
“Welcome to India, your one stop shop for a simple and traditional wife. We have everything you’re looking for, just ask each available girls father for worth.”
That’s what should be on the travel guides they give out at travel agencies. I’m not kidding you. Most of the men who come to this country are not here on vacation but are here on business and I can assure you it is not for the Coca Cola Company.
I should have known the moment I saw him walk in the front door that he was here for a bride. This would be the second time they would have to go through this scenario. My sister was not exactly obliging either. At least the next three marriages will be easy, they are all boys.
“I’m now being exiled to America?” I asked my parents. “You cannot do this to me. I will not allow it.”
“Anita, you are of the age to be married and you are to marry young Mr. Costello.” My father said in a very serious, don’t you dare question me again, voice.
“Yes father.” I said looking down at my plate of chicken. I knew I couldn’t argue with him this time… but there is always the fun of driving Mr. Xavier Costello away.
x-x-x
I sat downstairs in the library reading one of my favorite books when I heard one of the gargantuan wooden doors open. I looked up and saw that Xavier had just sauntered into the room, looking around as casually as he most possibly could.
“I thought I’d find you here.” He said quietly, stopping in the middle of the room and looking at me coyly. “Well, more like your mother told me where to find you.” He confessed.
“What do you want?” I asked. I was hoping that it was to say that he had changed his mind and did not want this marriage after all and that would make my evening that much more bearable.
“I just wanted to wish you a good night. My mother, father, and I are leaving for our hotel.” What wonderful inconsequential information that I didn’t need.
“Good night then.” I said and returned to the wonderful world of Edward and Bella.
He turned to leave then but then turned around to face me once more. What else could this boy have to say to me?
“Look, I’m not at all interested in getting married but my folks are making me, something about some contract they made with your mother and father at my birth.” he said in an annoyed tone.
Wow, his moods are as erratic as my own. I must remember to bring this up at our next dinner with his parents.
I stared at him as he continued to speak.
“Don’t get me wrong, Anita, you are as beautiful as my parents claimed you were.” He said a little more softly. “I just don’t think that I’m ready for this journey.”
I knew what this was. I can recognize these little trips that people seem to take when things don’t quite go their way. A little trip called Guilt and it is a personal favorite of my mothers. I detested its practice in any form.
“Don’t guilt trip me into wanting to marry you, Xavier.” I said not removing my eyes from the book in my hands. “It doesn’t work when my mother tries it on me and it most definitely won’t work for you.”
“Is there something that I did to offend you when I walked in the door this morning? Or is this just the way you treat everyone you meet?” He said in a way that suggested that he had been wounded.
“Just the ones asking for my hand in marriage.” I stated. “I assure you that I’m not in the least bit excited about this either.” He said as he turned around and stormed out, being sure to slam the door behind him.
If the omnipresent Lord seriously thinks that this is funny, then he has another thing coming when I get there, this I can assure you._________________ Proud Memember Of The House Of Carlisle!
