Rule: Try to stay objective, please. I didnīt start this to hurt someone, but because of simple interest.

What prejudices have the Germans toward the Americans (or other nations if youīre not American) and the other way round?

Tell me what you know^^

Well I think itīs very interesting to know what kind of prejudices people of other nations have towards the Germans.
I mean, we heard a lot about it in school (and pretty crazy stuff too) but I like to know what kind of prejudices you know or have yourself^^

In Germany, a very common prejudice towards the Americans is that we think you all like fast food.

What about it? Is it true or just something the Europeans think of you without a reason?

In school, we heard that many people in America think the Germans eat a lot of cutlet with sauerkraut/ red cabbage and potatoes.

I have to say that I donīt. The last time I ate cutlet was about five months ago at my dads birthday.
But I know many people eating it about twice a week, so itīs kind of true^^

Hah. Most Americans DO eat a lot of fast food. Maybe this is why we're 'obese' compared to other countries.

I dunno if there really is any prejudices against Germany that I have, mostly 'cause I'm part German so that would be like dissing myself. But when people [my friends, people i know, etc] think of Germany, the first thing that comes to mind is nazis. That's not a bad thing; that's all anyone really knows about Germany. I'm not sure if this helps you..

I agree with Anna on the immediate Nazi reaction...it's not really assuming that all Germans are Nazis, it's just that they have an automatic connection in their brains.
A lot of us DO eat fast food, but I know plenty of people who despise it.

Well...
Of course many people think of the Nazis when they think of Germany and thatīs quite understandable because of the German history... but some people here still feel pretty guilty for what happened although they had nothing to do with it...
When had the soccer worldcup here in Germany in 2006 and many people started to feel some patriotism again, they went all "Oh my god, be careful with patriotism, think of the Nazis, donīt forget what happened" in the news magazines. Like we could ever forget.

cutlet with sauerkraut/ red cabbage and potatoes?

I barely know what that IS...so no, I don't think you eat a lot of it. xD
I agree with the Nazi connection. The only thing we really learn in school (unless we choose to dig deeper ourselves, to research, or to explore aspects of a country) are the big things that happened, such as the Holocaust.

I can't really diss Germans or Germany, like Anna said, since I AM part German.

Most of us here do love fast food. xD Though not all of us, a good chunk of us love it because of how convenient it is, I guess. I don't eat much fast food, so I can't really give perspective there.

Do they say anything else in Germany about America? I know in North Korea, for example, they think we're a country that loves war and that we need to be destroyed to have peace. Which is kinda redundant, but whatever. xD

America isn't exactly...loved...around the world. -shifty eyes- Us and our big mouths. Razz

HA. True. I just don't understand why people hate the German's because of Hitler. Stupid, stupid, STUPID. I don't think that Jewish people still hate us (I say us because my dad is half german, therefor, im german. My Oma was full blooded german, thank you very much.) and I get teased at school for being who I am. One time I was called a 'German Monkey'.
People who bash other people and places just because of something that happened long ago are idiots.

Thanks guys^^ I really appreciate that^^
But the fact is that Germans, at least most of us, donīt see it that way. Many people I know still feel very bad about the Holocaust cuz their anchestors were involved in it (or in the war) and itīs not like we werenīt reminded of it all the time.
If you could choose, would you want to be part of a nation that did sucha thing? I think not.

about the cutlet thing *lol* well, itīs traditional German food and it can taste pretty good but Iīm not all that fond of German food cuz it usually contains much fat^^

and: No German at his senses would even THINK about eating cutlet with kraut *lol* youīd eat it with french fries or (in the South) with spaetzle and maybe with some sauce^
Youīd eat red cabbage most likely with roast and sauerkraut with bratwurst^^

Here a cutlet (or German: Schnitzel) with spaetzle (Spätzle):

And here a bratwurst with sauerkraut:

Really? Because if anyone wouldīve asked me, I wouldnīt have chosen to be German... but when I think about it, nery every nation commited bad crimes so Iīd probably think the same thing if I was American....idk^^

And it really tastes good (the second one too)^^

Same with me....I donīt say I hate Germany......cuz really, I donīt.
But I wouldnīt have chosen to be of a nation that will always be connected with a such as the Holocaust if I wouldīve had a choice....

And I believe that probably many people feel kinda like that thinking of their own nation......well, the Swiss people maybe not but still^^
*lol*
