What is composing?

Composing takes place when someone invents a piece of music themselves Usaually it will be written down, or to use the proper word, notated into a musical score. A composition can be based on ideas or styles which already exist.

What is Improvising?

Improvising takes place when you make up music as you go along.
Usually there are clear rules, which make improvising easier; but it is must based on hearing it as you make it up.

A few Musical Symbols

= A Crotchet, worth 1 beat.

= A quaver note/two quavers, each worth half a beat.

= A Crotchet rest, silence for one beat.

= A minim rest, silence for two beats.

The symbols at the start of a piece can either be:

= A Treble Clef

OR

= A Bass Clef

depending on the pitch/scale of the piece. The Treble Clef is the most common.

Other Key Words

Unison= when all performers play the same notes

Ostinato= A repeated pattern

Imitation= repeating the phrase of one part

Round (Canon)= exact copy of another part

Dynamics= how loud the piece should begin, whether there should be any changes.

Tempo= how fast tor slow the speed of the piece should be.

Pitch= whether instruments should be high or low.

Texture= how many layers there should be in the piece (i.e. how many instrument parts)

Melody= the main tune in the piece.

I think there is a difference between countries.

Because we call
a quarter note/two quarter notes,

an eighth note/two eighth notes,

a quarter rest, and

a half rest.

but yes, it is probably different in different countries, like with many things.
