Having the right amount of contrast in your picture is important. Keep in mind that every photographer has a different eye for things and different ideas for their photos! Lighting plays a key role in your contrast, so try to get the right amount of lighting you need to set the desired mood for your photo. You can have dim lights without having too little contrast, and you can have bright lights without over contrasting!

Pictures that have too much contrast look washed out, unprofessional or too unrealistic:



Pictures that have too little contrast look dark and boring:



Here are some examples of good contrast - they are clear, focused and not too washed out or dark:
