I know I'm not an official teacher here, and I'm sorry if I'm not allowed to post a mini-lesson. You can delete this if you want.
SER is the infinitive meaning "to be". Ser is an irregular verb, which means it's not conjugated like most.
(yo) -- SOY
(tu) -- ERES
(Usted, El, Ella) -- ES
(nosotros/nosotras) -- SOMOS
(vosotros/vosotras) -- SOIS
(Ustedes, Ellos, Ellas) -- SON
SER is used to describe things that do not change, i.e. Time (this is confusing, but the idea is that the CONCEPT of time itself does not change), physical characteristics.
Examples:
"Maria is a pretty girl."
"Maria
es una chica bonita."
To describe things that do change (i.e. feelings, location) you use the verb ESTAR, which is a completely different matter I hope to (or the official teacher) will get to later.
